Vayu Lingam of Srikalahasti: A Major Spiritual Hub in
Andhra Pradesh
Located in Srikalahasti, about 36 km from Tirupati
The Sri Kalahasti Temple, one of the oldest and
most sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, has a history that stretches back
more than a thousand years. Located on the banks of the Swarnamukhi
River in Andhra Pradesh, the temple is a shining example of South
Indian architecture, spirituality, and devotion.
DWAJASTHAMBHAM
This temple is known as Dakshina Kailasam, meaning “Kailasa of the South”, and is one of the five sacred temples representing the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as the element of Vayu (Air).
The temple’s history records says that Lord Shiva himself
appeared here to bless three creatures – a spider (Sri), snake (Kala), and elephant (Hasti) – for their unwavering
devotion. Another legend tells of Bhakta Kannappa, a tribal devotee
who offered his eyes to stop the bleeding from the Shiva
Lingam. The Lord, moved by his love, restored his vision and granted him moksha
(salvation).
One of the major attractions of the temple is the Rahu-Ketu
Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Pooja, performed for devotees seeking relief from
astrological doshas. People from across India visit the temple to participate
in this special ritual.
Architecturally, Srikalahasti Temple reflects the grandeur
of the Vijayanagara style, with its tall gopurams, detailed stone carvings, and
spacious mandapams. The temple is located on the banks of the Swarnamukhi
River, adding to its scenic and spiritual charm.
With improved road and rail connectivity from Tirupati, the
temple has become easily accessible for pilgrims and tourists. The temple
authorities continue to enhance facilities for visitors, ensuring a comfortable
and peaceful darshan experience.
As both a spiritual center and a cultural landmark,
Srikalahasti Temple remains a symbol of devotion and heritage, drawing lakhs of
pilgrims every year.
